Description

Damn, this one was really hard...
It took me a couple of weeks and kept me awake many nights. But it's finally finished.

I know there was not much time to follow Kai Leng after he injured Thane, but...I wished my first Shepard would have shown a bit more concern and feelings - Thane was her love after all. So I painted this to have a more emotional scene.

I'm not really happy with Shepard's face, but I tried so many different things and this was the best result.
With this painting beeing so colourful one could almost overlook the blood ;)

I agree with the sentiment entirely!

I think I know what you mean with Shepard's face - it's perhaps a little too well defined in the wrinkles and such - maybe they are a little too dark..? Maybe it's the lighting? Maybe her teeth are a little to bright..? Hmm...

But you know at the same time, I think you could go a bit abstract on this piece and actually *exaggerate* that rather than trying to 'correct' it.

Sure. You could 'correct' it, maybe, and make the whole piece blend together more realistically... But on the other hand you might actually have struck a little artistic gold if you go the opposite way. Maybe you could smooth out Thane a little... Make him blurry, peaceful, serene in *image* as well as just the expression on his face. Then do the exact opposite with Shepard... Have every detail picked out, more stark in contrast of light and dark for all the colours and really go nuts on the shadows. You could perhaps shift the background into a graded colour shift between the two of them - white (or blue?) for Thane, black/grey (or red?) for Shepard...

If you were ever to remake this piece, you could try going really blue vs red on it and have his green a little more blue (or his attire as if worn in the presence of blue light) and change her armour colour to be a darkened red perhaps. Make her skin *really* pale... deathly low, whilst he looks warm and alive... A reflection of their emotions at the time perhaps where oddly, she's the one who feels like she's dying, whilst he feels at ease and relaxed as if ending a long hard day at work.

Just an idea. I think you might actually have struck something special in your errors here. As in... what you think of as errors might just be the key to making a piece of art - and fan art - that would really stand out a mile (in a good way - I hasten to add!). As it is, it's still a piece full of emotion and that's good. I will say I think this is a piece that looks better larger. As in... I think I really only notice her face and question it when seeing the image from a distance/smaller.

Either way, I think I might like to add it to the albums of a Facebook page I admin called Mass Effect Female Shepard - with your permission of course though! If you would rather not, or perhaps would rather go at this piece again (I understand not wanting to have shown to large numbers of people, a piece you as artist are not 100% happy with - I think everyone is entitled to feel that way!) then I'd be eager to see what you do with it. :D Regardless, there's a lot to love about this piece.
